How to get to Rock City in Rio de Janeiro

With the departure of the Pope and Festas Juninas celebrations over, Rock in Rio, just about one month, is the next big thing in Cidade Maravilhosa. Tickets were sold out in record time so if you were lucky enough to get your paws on some then Preparations are already in full swing with Rock City in Barra de Tijuca already taking shape. If you live in Rio you will know about the constant problems that affect the public transport system, especially if you need to get to Barra, so one of the biggest questions is: how do I get to Rock City?

The first thing I will say is that you if you are thinking of taking the motor then think again! Being in Barra everyone’s first instinct is to go by car. However, all roads within the vicinity of Rock City will be closed off and towing will be enforced. If you must go by car then you would probably want to park in Barra Shopping or Shopping Via Parque and take the circular bus (see below) to get to Rock City.

We would recommend the metro but it’s not quite ready so maybe next time.

That leaves us with only one option: bus. Luckily the organisers have thought about how they can make it easier for those who have shelled out quite a lot of money for tickets. There will be special First Class buses that will take you straight to Rock City but you can also use the normal public bus system.

First Class Bus

This is by far the most hassle-free method of getting to and from Rock City although it does come at a price. R$50 (US$22) to be exact. Comfortable, air-conditioned buses will depart from set locations every hour between 11am and 8pm and will go directly to Rock City. Those locations are Aeroporto Santos Dumont, Aeroporto Internacional Tom Jobim, Barra da Tijuca, Campo Grande, Castelo, Copacabana, Ipanema, Lagoa, Méier, Norte Shopping, Recreio Shopping, Shopping Rio Sul, Rodoviária Novo Rio, Saens Pena and Santa Cruz.

Return trips will be made from midnight until 1 hour after the final band finishes on the World Stage and will have no set times. They will make various stops along the route so make sure you get on the right bus.

You can buy tickets online or at the RioCard store on Rua da Carioca, 44. If you do buy online then do it quick as the deadline for delivery at home is August 15th. After this date you will need to collect the card at the physical store.

Each person can buy a maximum of four tickets per day. A small charge will be levied for each delivery. If you buy five tickets then that will count as two deliveries and you will have to pay two delivery charges. You cannot use credit cards on the site. Instead you will be sent an email with a boleto bancário which you will need to print and pay at a bank. You have 72 hours to make the payment otherwise your order will be cancelled.

Circular bus route

The other option is to use normal public buses. You can use this good website to see what bus routes pass by Rock City but I think your best bet would be to try to use the special circular routes that will be in place. This route starts at the Alvorada bus terminal in Barra and goes to Rock City via Shopping Via Parque, Casa Shopping and Barra Shopping so there are plenty of places that link up with normal bus routes. This circular line will run from midday to 4am.
