Graffiti Art in Action on Ladeira Ary Barroso

There was not much to look at. Check for yourself…

Gallery of now:

We have been approached by UPP in Chapéu Mangueira & Babilônia to participate in this project. What started as a kind request to donate 3 sprays ended as a revitalisation of 40 metres of the street.

We helped with the plaster finish of the wall. Then we organized the paint of basic background color. Then Luiz together with us spent some time buying material for the big day. The big day was marked for saturday, august 2nd. We were hoping and praying for the weather to help us and it did. We woke up to a great sunny day.

Soon after 9am graffiti artists from all around Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area started to apear. We had friends coming from Campo Grande, Bangu, Jardim América , Botafogo, Copacabana, Niterói, Rocinha. The big thank you goes to Luiz and his crew, Wark da Rocinha, Miguel FernandezVitor VGSPandroRodrigo Eok, Daniel Frickmann, Tis FzoCrew, and Jean Poul Livrement.

Without you this would not be possible. THANK YOU!!!

These were the instructions of Imagina na Copa movement. And it is excactly what we did:

Imagina na copa Hostel Rio de janeiro

Then, after a coffee and a cake we went to check again and it was gone. We are happy that we warmed up someone’s body and soul. Try it too. Feels very nice. Or check Imagina na Copa facebook page here, to see if other great ideas of how to be nice to each other and to the city you live or stay in will inspire you.

Smile. It’s a nice day.

we are here 1902

1902. This is where once would stand Lisetonga Hostel.

Leme is higher class neighborhood in South zoneof the city of Rio de Janeiro, sharing the same beach sand as Copacabana. The name is from the Leme Stone, that apparently when seen from above reminds a rudder of a ship. You may need to rent a helicopter to check that. We can help. Ask. :-)

During Empire this was a region where families went picnicking and sightseeing. As it was difficult to acess in the past, until the end of the nineteenth century only existed in the area the Fort of Leme, the little church of Our Lady of Copacabana and some farms and ranches.

we are here 1902

Between 1892 and 1894 the Company Civil Construction (owned by Otto and Simon Duvivier) created the neighborhood streets. Its main street, Gustavo Sampaio, was opened in 1894. With the inauguration of the New Tunnel, or Leme Tunnel, in 1906, the tramway company of Ferro Carril Botanical Gardens would reach Leme, with last stop at Guard’s Square (Praça del Vigia).

This is when the photo was taken.

In 1906, following the edge of Copacabana and Leme, Atlantic Avenue was completed and became postcard neighborhood. Later, in 1971, would be doubled for the implementation of the boardwalk.

Below the Babilônia Hill there was a ranch of Torquato Couto, then rented to Chaves Faria. Also the family of Wilhelm Marx resided here (father of landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx – You can go to his museum. You may need a scooter for that We can help. Ask.:-), who built the Babylon street, currently called Ladeira Ari Barroso, after famous composer who lived and died there. Underneath this Ladeira was connected to Rua Araújo Gondin (Current Gal. Ribeiro da Costa), where Dominican priests founded the Church N. Lady of the Rosary, built between 1927 and 1931.

The early occupation of the slopes of Babilônia took place in 1915. From 1934, occupancy increased considerably, giving rise to the Communities of Babylon and Chapéu Mangueira. On the hill of Babylon (238 m), there was a Telegraph, accessed by road that ran from Ladeira do Leme (Which is NOT Ladeira Ary Barroso :-) , and today was absorbed by forest.

Below Leme hill stands Fort Duque de Caxias, built in 1776, under the name of Fort Spy or Guard, standing at 125 m altitude. In 1823, the fort received artillery weapons. Rebuilt in 1919 in project Augusto Tasso Fragoso, was deactivated in 1975, when it gave way to the Center for the Study of Army Staff. Within the area of the fort, there are ruins dating from 1711 and in 1823 named Stone Ring, which should serve as signalers to observe the movement of ships at the entrance of Guanabara Bay. You can visit it daily for R$4. In the 1950s and 60s the the neighborhood is verticalised. What a shame! It starts with the construction of buildings of Meridian hotels of the French Le Méridien, renamed later to Windsor, and residential buildings. Leme, however, kept its calm, well represented by the “Fishermen road” by the Pedra do Leme, which is one of the most beautiful waterfront views of Rio.
